New Zealand Law Awards –
voting begins shortly

Voting for the 2007 NZ Law Awards begins on 17 September.
For in-house counsel, the Law Awards provide two opportunities:

· The chance to have your say on how your firms have performed over the year; and
· The opportunity to be celebrated and honoured for the work you have done over this period.

The Law Awards is about celebrating and rewarding excellence in the profession as judged by those most affected by the work of lawyers – their clients. As experienced lawyers working within corporate and government organisations, in-house lawyers are in the unique position of being able to understand exactly what is needed from their external legal providers. Therefore, you are best
placed to judge whether or not the service you have been provided with this year has more than
met your expectations.

Profile: Demanding client wins In-house Counsel Team Award for 2006

Although delighted to see Vodafone New Zealand listed among the 10 finalists, Vodafone’s General Counsel David Kreider came to the New Zealand Law Awards dinner last year expecting simply to enjoy dinner and hear some good speeches.

However, when he “walked in on Friday morning carrying the crystal trophy”, the team were thrilled to discover that they were the winners of the PPB McCallum Petterson In-house Counsel Team Award.

From the President

The CLANZ committee spent a busy day in Wellington this week renewing our strategic plan. Over the past year, we have been keenly focused on the legislative changes facing the legal profession and we will continue to represent the interests of
in-house lawyers under the new regime.

Going forward, the committee will be putting even more focus
and energy into the membership offering and delivering value and benefit to our members.

Helen Mackay
CLANZ President
On behalf of all in-house lawyers, I would like to recognise the huge contribution made to the profession by our LCA subcommittee who have led the important debate on the role and representation of
in-house lawyers in the wider profession.

Thank you Tim Whiteley, Robert Buchanan, Genevieve Hancock, Ronald Pol and Richard Best.

2008 CONFERENCE

The CLANZ conference will return to Rotorua next year, at a new venue large enough to accommodate
the growing numbers of in-house counsel attending this important event in the in-house calendar.
Mark your diaries now, for the Energy Events Centre, Rotorua, on 15-16 May 2008.

Legal profession changes – Update

As mentioned in the last edition of eCLANZ, we have now provided NZLS with a supplementary
submission about the proposed definition of "in-house lawyer" in the new rules of conduct and client
care. This submission focuses on two main issues: what requirements a lawyer needs to meet if s/he
provides in-house legal services but is not an employee of the client and, secondly, what ethical or
professional rules ought to be prescribed for those people who are involved in the in-house practice
of law, whether as an employee or otherwise. The Society has acknowledged receipt of the submission
but we've not yet had any feedback on it. A copy of this submission, and our original written submission,
will soon be available on the CLANZ website.
Hurdles for overseas qualified lawyers in New Zealand
CLANZ Committee member Richard Best has prepared a detailed article arguing the case for reform of
New Zealand's legal requalification requirements for overseas common law lawyers. The key message
is that those requalification requirements, and the processes surrounding them, are outdated,
unreasonable and in need of review. Click here for a short version of the article. Click here for the
full version.

Compliance costs of discovery climb
Lawyers Weekly reports that judicial criticism of litigants and their lawyers, including specific mention
of in-house counsel and major law firms, in a string of Australian cases adds a growing compliance
burden on corporate counsel dealing with the large legal bills associated with discoverable electronic
data. For full story

Annual Legal Salary Survey
The annual salary survey is currently underway, conducted by
professional services/ legal department consultancy Team Factors in association with CLANZ and Thomson/Brookers. Helping meet the needs of lawyers who want access to objective, independent remuneration data, key results data will be available immediately they are available exclusively to participants. This year again involves private practice lawyers as well as in-house lawyers, enabling you to check base remuneration levels against your colleagues in private practice, and in-house between public and private sectors. All results are confidential, with responses aggregated by survey software. More than 1500 lawyers have already participated. If you or your team didn’t receive an email invitation on 4 Sept (or 31 Aug), click here
to register before it closes.

Working Parents Forum
A sharing of war stories and survival tips was held at the second Wellington event in the popular CLANZ-Bell Gully Working Parents Group series.  The panel made up of Toko Kapea from Tuia Legal, Jane Meares from Treasury and Helen Mackay from New Zealand Oil & Gas shared their experiences and the ways they juggle a demanding job with the joys of raising a family.  Toko put it very succinctly when he said all his decisions are made using the principle "family first".  Watch out for an Auckland event coming soon.

how to document it to achieve your goals.

Held in Auckland (4 Oct 2007) and Wellington (6 Nov 2007). $202.50 inc GST for non-members.
