The CLANZ committee is looking forward to a busy year ahead serving our members.  We will continue to improve the leadership, support and membership benefits we provide to you to ensure CLANZ is the association for in-house lawyers in New Zealand.  You will be aware that the legal profession is undergoing substantial reform and CLANZ has been playing its part in ensuring a robust debate on the new model and rules, particularly as they relate to in-house practice.  We will keep you updated with progress in this key area.  We are looking at how membership of CLANZ works to ensure that people are fully engaged as members.  This is your association and we welcome your participation.

SHOULD WE HAVE DISTRICT LAW SOCIETIES?
The Lawyers and Conveyancers Act 2006 disbands the current District Law Societies. The Societies have previously planned to "re-incorporate" under the Act but the Auckland District Law Society has recently floated a suggestion that District Law Societies don't incorporate but instead "become part of NZLS with NZLS taking responsibility for managing all regulatory and representative functions through regional and district branch offices". This proposal is being discussed by the New Zealand Law Society, the current District Societies, and the Sections of the New Zealand Law Society (including CLANZ) now. CLANZ sees this as a sensible way to provide for regional representation of practitioners while at the same time helping prevent a duplication of roles and resources. CLANZ welcomes your views. For a copy of the paper from the Auckland District Law Society, click here. To comment on the proposal please email members@clanz.co.nz

BUILDING THE MUSCLE -
using your external law firms to help provide community services

Many corporates provide community services these days, both supporting individual volunteer employees and giving more corporate support. Intel has taken it one step further. Their in-house legal team put out an RFP for external firms to help the internal team with pro bono on community service provides. Intel went with Baker & Mckenzie with which it had done work before but it emphasised that it wasn't important whether or not it had a previous business relationship. The initiative followed an extensive survey of legal staff that the company did last year, looking at what volunteer work the legal staff did and what impediments to doing community service work there were at the company.
